Hey everyone! The impending 2017-2018 TV season
A lot has happened since we last left off, from Jane getting sued by a stripper to Kat and Adena dealing with some serious immigration issues to Sutton briefly hooking up with Alex. It's been a wild ride for the Scarlet Trio, so let's get into it.
Jane had some of the most poignant storylines this season, and it's been such a joy to watch her character development. She's changing her outlook on life while also writing some kickass stories - but is that enough for her? Working for a big name brand magazine like Scarlet means that sometimes buzz and publicity are prioritized before the political articles she wants to tackle, and so when Jane receives a job offer with the promise of more freedom in choosing topics, she decides to take it, albeit reluctantly. It's a sad moment, considering she hadn't been a writer at Scarlet for very long (and she's leaving her friends) but it was the right move. Jane is still young and has the rest of her life laid out for her, and especially after recently finding out she has the BRCA gene mutation that can cause breast cancer, it's good for her to explore new avenues and all that. That being said, I will miss Jane and Jacqueline's interactions. Jane's learned a lot from her, and we really got to see a new side of Jacqueline through it all.
Speaking of Jacqueline, can that woman get any more amazing?! After Jane lashes out at her out of frustration and fear, in front of much of the Scarlet staff, no less, Jacqueline introduces Jane to her family instead of immediately firing her. When the office goes into a frenzy as a result of layoff rumors, Jacqueline wants to fight for everyone's job. When Oliver's No. 1 takes credit for Sutton's work during a shoot, Jacqueline encourages Sutton to start standing up for herself. She's literally the perfect boss, and the definition of a woman who wholeheartedly supports other woman. We learn in the gripping season finale that Jacqueline is a sexual assault survivor, and ugh, it was just such a heart-wrenching and powerful moment. Words can't describe how beautiful it was to see Jacqueline connect with a fellow survivor, and Jane's realization of Jacqueline's trauma. It's so amazing to see a survivor being able to move on - not the same as they were before the incident, but still equally capable of being kickass and self-assured.
On the flip side, Sutton is still trying to figure herself out after getting hired by Oliver, head of the fashion department. It's her dream job, and she's damn good at it - if you don't count her fiasco of losing an expensive necklace in a random taxi cab. Heck, she even gets to step in for Oliver at a fashion event in the finale! Romantic-wise, Richard and Sutton's secret relationship comes to an end after both agree it's too burdensome to continue hiding. Her fledgling relationship dies before it even really starts after Sutton realizes she's not over Richard, and he over her. Though they admit this to each other, I'm glad both Sutton and Richard are mature enough to realize their relationship is unsustainable. I'm sad about Alex and Sutton's potential, though and hope to see them develop more in the future.
And now onto my favorite girls and couple, Kadena! It's been a rough few days? weeks? months? for these two. After their "sparks fly" kiss in episode 4, Kat gets insecure about her place in Adena's life, especially compared to Adena's ex Coco. As a self professed "I don't do relationships" person, Kat abruptly cuts Adena off, only to change her mind just as abruptly after a Soul Cycle workout, only to find out Adena is leaving for Paris in an attempt to fix things with Coco. Their platonic "just friends" thing isn't fooling anyone, and they decide to start a relationship (finally!) - only to be faced with more barriers. Adena is briefly detained, and this scare forces Kat to reevaluate herself and her lack of adventure. (Her days at Scarlet have been pretty adventurous though; her first experience firing an intern was tough, but eye-opening.) Having never been outside of the states, Kat longs to be like Adena with her vast knowledge and memories of international sightseeing. After spending a night with Adena at the airport, Kat is encouraged to start traveling more, and eventually leaves for South America to reunite with Adena. This is huge, and I'm actually a little concerned about her job. We know that Kat has been dissatisfied with the work she does as Scarlet's social media director for a while, but did she straight up quit? Did she even say goodbye to Jane and Sutton? Kat's whole "thing" this season has been being reckless and impulsive, and while some of decisions ended well, most are concerning. Nevertheless, I continue to adore Kadena's chemistry, and can't wait to see more of them soon. Also, I'm glad Adena was mature enough to end things with Coco. Cheating storylines in wlw ships are never good.
In its freshman season alone, The Bold Type has been fearlessly tackling politics head-on, something most TV shows are afraid to even mention, let alone dedicate an episode entirely to Trump's headassery - episode 8, respectively. Before Tequila Sunrise is one of my favorite episodes, along with the finale, where we saw most of the Scarlet crew plus recently fired Pinstripe guy get tipsy and parade in gender neutral clothing. It really highlights how TBT is perfectly capable of combining fun with intersectional feminism, and I'm praying for this show to get a second season.
I love The Bold Type, and you should too. WATCH IT, and see you next time!
